BEHIND THE ISSUE: A Walk with the Ancestors

It seems only fitting that we bring to you the resurrection of 13Moons during this illuminated time of honoring our Ancestors, for they are the ones that carved the path for women like us: Mystics, Dreamers, Weavers of Stories, with one foot inside our world and the other inside theirs.

There is nothing quite like the creative buzz of the Samhain season. After the harvest there is a noticeable shift in energy. Here in the North Western Hemisphere, the air itself becomes thinner, filling our lungs with crisp Autumn air and there is a constant hum just beyond the boundaries of our physical sight.

This is my favorite time of year, when the Earth begins to quiet and fold back unto itself. In many ways, this time of year emulates the vibrancy of death. There is something peaceful in the atmosphere as we witness a life cycle end, preparing to reflect upon itself in silence for a new season.

As the air thins, so does the veil between our world and the Spirit world, bringing with it our Ancestral guides to walk beside us in their most physical forms. For the awakening intuitives, we learn that we are never quite alone, constantly walking in the footsteps of our Ancestors. Samhain is when those footsteps become visible to all that wish to see. We are accompanied by their guidance through the rustle of leaves dancing in the wind. This is the time of year when the Ancestors come through to spend time with those they truly love.

Samhain is about connecting with our roots and honoring our Ancestors. For myself, this begins to unfold with a stronger connection to the Spirits that I have known most recently in this lifetime. Both of my Grandmothers in Spirit seem more vibrant this time of year. They are always with me, but instead of their constant essence, I can feel the physical sensation of a hand on my cheek or lips pressed to my forehead.

The Ancestors I have not yet met in this physical realm seem to stop by without invocation. I often feel the presence of Spirit just above the left side of my head. Their energy feels ethereal and smokey, but during Samhain, I see their full bodied forms. My other senses become activated and I can catch the scent of rosemary as I hear their laughter and songs.

Samhain is, above all else, a celebration of those who came before us. Some regions see this season as the time when all things mystical and mysterious come out to play. In the West, we recognize this time as the begining of the holiday season for all faiths and non-faiths alike. Samhain blessings can be felt across the Earth as we remember those we have lost and honor that which not all choose to see.

It seems only fitting that we bring to you the resurrection of 13Moons during this illuminated time of honoring our Ancestors, for they are the ones that carved the path for women like us: Mystics, Dreamers, Weavers of Stories, with one foot inside our world and the other inside theirs. As womban, we carry the stories of our Ancestors within the walls of our sacred vessel. Their energy is both light and shadow, bending, folding, and consuming until it fills us up completely.

We honor our ancestors to heal the traumas carried within our bloodlines, to remember who we truly are. Through our ancestors we connect with The Mother that has birthed us all. This Samhain, we invite you not only to set an extra seat at the table, to listen to the whispers as you walk between the shadows, to place garlands of marigolds upon the Ofrenda, to burn a candle in memory of those you love most, but to also step into the unknown. We invite you to be fully present with the Ancestors in your authentic and most creative forms. We invite you to simply remember.
